Billie Quinn dropped into the chair opposite me in the café side of NaughTea Nibbles.

“Strangest name for a café ever,” she said. “But I suppose all the good magical names have been taken.”

“I figured you’d track me down today.” I glanced back down at my laptop. Nothing I didn’t want her to see on it, but I closed it anyway.

“Well, the reasons to interview Twizzle list keeps growing.” She pulled out her notepad and set it next to her cup of coffee.

“Choose one, then I need to get back to work.”

“That’s one of the reasons I need to chat with you.” Billie grinned. “But it’s not the hot news item of the day. We’ll save that interview for next Monday’s business page.”

“What’s the topic?” I gave her my best stern-teacher look. One I’d learned from my mother, the elementary school teacher.

“Seems that your name is coming up as a challenger to Penny Parler for a town council seat.”

“Oh.” I kept the stern look going. “Who is mentioning that?”

“Darn near everyone. Even Star dropped your name in a conversation with Cinder yesterday.”

I stared at Billie. “Think about that for a moment… The leader of the Blues, who controls the town council and who wants to be mayor, mentions me…” I let that idea hang for a few seconds, “to the live-in girlfriend of the only reporter in town? How often did my name get mentioned in their conversations before now?”

“Never. You’re not on Star’s radar. The last time was when you saved her and the Blues in the tunnels. Nada since then.” Billie tapped her pen on the open pad. “Mary Pat seems to have a big interest in you.”

I wasn’t ready to announce to the world that Star had threatened me at this very table the day before. If I did, I’d have to have Nikki back me up, and Star could make business very rough for her. I couldn’t do that to a friend. However…

“And”—I leaned toward Billie like I was about to whisper a secret—“Penny Parler strongly hinted that I should move up to Rapier Place and give up my pier apartment.”

“Is that on the record?” A smile tugged at her lips.

I shrugged. “Sure. If Penny is going to ask me to vacate my lease, why not?” No matter who ran against Penny, she’d have a PR issue to manage thanks to pushing me to abandon the pier apartment.

“Umm… there are a few reasons I can think of for her wanting you gone.” Billie smile shifted to a knowing one. She asked the leading question I was expecting. “What reason did she give for wanting you off the pier?”

“That they need an office on the pier for the demolition supervisor.” I chuckled. Penny hadn’t said our conversation was private. She might expect it to stay that way, but she hadn’t told me that. “She knows I’m opposed to destroying the pier.”

“So she used that reason, hoping you’d just walk away and move in with your boyfriend? Was that the only reason?”

“You can do the political math.
